V&A収蔵の小袖・袴

背中に 大きく蜘蛛の巣の柄を広げた麻の小袖。 左胸は 蜘蛛が糸を引き下がっている様子の柄になっている。 この素材は、縦にストライプの織紋様が走る麻を、墨黒に染めたたもの。 そこに、蜘蛛の巣柄をガンメタで染めている。鈍い配色といい、男らしい麻のシワ感といい、いぶし銀なシャレが効いた小袖と言える。

すっきりとしたシルエットを追求するため特許技術を盛り込んだ小袖なので、柄入れ作業を仕立ての工程に差し込むことになり、加工の流れは複雑だ。 職人たちの間を行き来しながら、繰り返し手が加えられて、迫力ある柄が独特な風合いの生地に納まっていく。 所々に やや透け感を見せている通り、夏まで着られる単衣仕立てだ。 大胆な背中の絵柄が、渋めにまとめられ、底力を感じさせる小袖に仕上がっている。

袴について。素材は、いかにも日本製らしい精緻さに溢れた紋織りジャカードのデニムだ。白地にグレーで千鳥格子柄が大胆に織り上げられている。小袖が、渋さを充分に漂わせているので、古風な印象に偏り過ぎないよう、メリハリの効いた袴をコーディネートすることで、こなれた雰囲気へと解放させている。 小袖の力強さに逆らうことなしに、モダンな軽快さをも呼び込み、現代的な装いへと導いてくれる。 小袖、袴ともに、使い込んでいくことで味わいが増していく素材なので、自分らしく馴染んだ着こなしが楽しめるコーディネートと言えよう。

KOSODE that pursues a sharp silhouette requires special techniques to make it. In addition, the work of adding patterns has become more complicated. Many craftsmen worked on it repeatedly, and the powerful pattern was put into the unique texture of the fabric. The bold design on the back gives this KOSODE a strong impression.

About HAKAMA. The material is jacquard woven denim that is very Japanese. A gray houndstooth pattern is boldly woven on a white background. The sharp design of HAKAMA creates a modern atmosphere. It adds modern lightness to KOSODE's strength. Both KOSODE and HAKAMA are made of materials that will improve the texture as you use them, so they will fit your style.

V&A収蔵の紙子ローブ（参考作品）

こちらは、再生産が不可能なため、今回のＶ＆Ａ Ｃｏｌｌｅｃｔｉｏｎ Ｍｅｍｏｒｉａｌ Ｍｏｄｅｌには含まれないが、上記の小袖＋袴とともにＶ＆Ａ博物館へ収蔵された紙子のローブである。 参考までに、ご紹介したい。

〈紙子〉とは、強度を増す加工を施した和紙で作られた衣類だ。和紙というと、ペーパーと英訳されるだろうが、その風合いは むしろ樹皮に近く、ファイバーとの表記が相応しい。

その歴史は古く、和紙が大量に普及し、紙本来の書くという目的以外に、衣料として着用される様になったのは、平安中期と言われ、源平合戦の頃には防寒着として用いられていた。絹より安価なことで庶民の衣服と想像しがちだが、むしろ風流な印象が愛され、丈夫で軽く、持ち運びが簡単なため、特に武士や俳人等に好まれてきた。2014年、和紙がユネスコの無形文化遺産に登録された。世界に認められるのは、めでたいことだが、実のところ、これは紙子の素材となる和紙の製法すら途絶えようとしているという警鐘に他ならない。

島田康子女史によってのみ作られる紙子の原紙は、およそ紙とは思えない強度を持っている。 強いものであれば、たたんでも自然に戻ってしまう程、ハリ・コシが強いのだ。 それでは、衣服として適度なハリ・コシになるまで使い込んで（育てて）いくのに、かなりの年月を要してしまうので、このローブには出来る限り薄手の原紙を作っていただいた。

もちろん、強度と適度なハリ・コシを維持したまま、硬さをしなやかさへと変えるべく加工してもらったのである。 蒟蒻糊の塗布や煮たり揉みこむことで強度を増し、乾かし,浸し,絞り,染めるという工程を、水溶液の濃度を変えながら何度も繰り返して、色を付けていくのである。 今回は、和紙らしく馴染む色合いで、他に衣服にも合わせやすい墨色のモヤモヤとしたムラ染めにするべく、主に松煙を使って染めていただいている。

普段から着ていただくことで味わいある紙子の風合いへと変化していくので、仕立てにはミシン縫製を中心とし、デニムのように裁ち目もデザインとして活かした。 創業当時から使っているスタンドカラーの型紙を、紙子専用に見直し、紙子の特性を活かしたローブに仕上げている。 燃えない限り、一生着ていただけるので、飽きのこないシンプルなデザインにこだわり、仕立てた。

当然ながら、同じものは２度と作れないが、同じデザインで 染色法を変えた紙子のローブを、今後のコレクションに登場させる計画もあるので、引き続き ご期待いただきたい。

KAMIKO is a garment made of Japanese paper that has been processed to increase its strength. KAMIKO may be translated into English as paper, but its texture is rather close to that of bark, so it is suitable to be described as fiber.

It has a long history and is said to have been worn in the middle of the Heian period, and was used as cold weather clothing during war. It is loved for its elegant impression and has been favored especially by samurai and haiku poets because it is strong, light and easy to carry. In 2014, washi paper was registered as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO. It is an auspicious thing to be recognized by the world, but in fact, this is nothing but a warning that even the production method of washi, which is the material of KAMIKO, is coming to an end.

Of course, no one can make the same thing twice, but there are plans to add a new ROBE of KAMIKO with the same design and different dyeing methods to future collections, so keep your hopes up.
